Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Livingstone, Chobe National Park (Dx1)
Victoria Falls, one of natures wonders of the world and a great place to start your tour from. We recommend that you have a few days here pre tour to see the falls and engage in the many activities on offer here. We start our by tour towards the Botswana boarder. An interesting boarder crossing as the Chobe/ Zambezi River confluence acts as the natural barrier between the two countries. We cross into Botswana via the Kazangula Ferry and enter a land that is both rich in diversity and culture. We travel a short distance to Kasane where we will stay the night. Optional activities include taking a relaxing afternoon 'Fish Eagle' cruise on the Chobe River or an afternoon game drive in the hope of spotting many of the great wildlife for which Chobe is renowned. Chobe has a huge population of elephant and if we are lucky we will see a family of elephant come down to the river for an early evening drink or even a bath. Watching the sun slide down over the tranquil riverside setting of tangled trees and grassy plains is another Chobe treat.
Days 2 to 5: Okavango Delta, Maun (Bx4 / Lx3 / Dx4)
You have the opportunity to take a mourning 4x4 game drive in Chobe National Park (own expense) before travelling to Maun, the gateway to one of the worlds most renowned and complex eco systems - The Okavango Delta. The beautiful Okavango Delta is a natural wetland system spreading over 1,600,00ha of northern Botswana. The Okavango River begins life in Angola, and when it reaches Botswana divides repeatedly into an intricate floodplain of thousands of channels that spread to form an inland delta - the only one of its kind in the world. We spend two nights camping out in the wilderness where experienced and knowledgeable 'polers' guide you through the maze of channels by mokoro - traditional dug out canoe, and by foot on a walking safari. We camp on a remote island haven in the middle of the pristine wilderness of reed filled lagoons and tranquil waterways and with luck may spot some of the delta's unusual wildlife and prolific birdlife. This is a true wilderness experience and at night you are surrounded by the sounds of the African bush to send you asleep, or keep you awake!
Days 6 & 7: Khama Rhino Sanctuary, Johannesburg (Bx2 / Dx1)
For those wanting more adventure there is an opportunity to fly over the delta by small plane for a bird's eye view of this natural wonder this morning (time permitting, own expense), a great way to appreciate the immense size of this water world.
Our destination today is the Khama Rhino Sanctuary situated near the South African boarder. In 1989 a group of locals wanted to convert the Serwe Pan previously a hunting area, into a conservation area, especially for rhino. The Pan was chosen because of its excellent habitat for rhino and proximity to a Botswana Defence Force base who could provide 24 hour protection. Located on the edge of the vast Kalahari Desert, a prime habitat for white rhino, zebra and wildebeest and giraffe and we can observe game at the several natural waterholes. This is a community based wildlife project that benefits the local Botswana communities and protects a great number of endangered white rhino. We enjoy an evening game drive in the sanctuary on the lookout for these and other magnificent beasts. On our last day we travel into South Africa to Johannesburg ending our eventful and inspiring tour.
