Oudtshoorn, South Africa
Oudtshoorn is the economic centre of the Little Karoo, the heart of the ostrich-farming industry and its largest tourist draw. In the late 19th century, owing to the demand for ostrich feathers, many of the local farmers became fabulously wealthy, building grand mansions on their estates - nicknamed 'feather palaces'. These feather palaces are now open to the public.
The Cango Caves
Under the massive Swartberg Mountains, about 25km north of Oudtshoorn, lie The Cango Caves, a massive cave system. Not all of it is open to the public but it is definitely worth seeing, despite the development of the site as a first-class tourist trap.
